February 21, 2017

There is no new reading for Thursday. If you haven’t read Conley (2015), Ch. 2 (‘Methods’) yet, now is your chance to catch up!

As a way of thinking about some common issues in social scientific research, take another listen to the first 1:44 of the radio piece on the ‘myth’ of gun ownership that I played at the end of class. Pause the playback at 1:44, and try to write down any defects you can think of in the Kleck & Gertz study. We’ll listen to the rest of it in class and discuss.

  • Conley (2015), pp. 38-39 (‘Divisions within Sociology: Microsociology and Macrosociology’)

  • Benokraitis (2015), Ch. 1 (‘The Changing Family’)

Please focus on Sections 1.1 (‘What Is a Family?’), 1.4 (‘Some Myths About the Family’), and 1.5 (‘Three Perspectives on the Changing Family’).
