Prep

In Class

  • Monday’s class was a mélange of mop-up action vis-a-vis Vol. I, on the one hand, and (all-too-brief) discussion of the dramatic twists on which Vol. II (the whole novel, really) hinges. In this, our final discussion, we’ll look at a couple of key scenes as portrayed in various film adaptations (probably just the 1940 version), make sure everybody’s clear on the plot from beginning to end, and then raise some questions concerning Austen’s general views on love and marriage.

For Next Time

  • Benokraitis (2015), Ch. 9 (‘Singlehood, Cohabitation, Civil Unions, and Other Options’); focus on Sections 9.1 (‘The Single Option’), 9.4 (‘Why More People Are Single’), and 9.6 (‘Cohabitation’), and 9.7 (‘Gay and Lesbian Couples’)
